G Stables' "Class Book"

Dave Deeming is trying to trace the owner of a book of anatomical drawings belonging to a G Stables who was in the Royal Army Medical Corps with his late father who joined up in 1933. The only information he has is his initial and his army service number which is 7261710. He would love to return the book to G Stables' family. If anybody has any information, please contact me through the website and I can pass your details on.

Frank Stables' disappearance

Frank Stables mysteriously disappeared in 1911, leaving a wife and seven children. By 1920 he was considered dead and probate was granted. Does anyone have any information about this intriguing story? If so, we'd love to hear from you. A photograph of Frank and his will can be viewed here.

World War I memories

Daniel Stables - Waterloo Veteran

It has come to our attention that a Daniel Stables of Yorkshire was awarded the Waterloo Medal and received an army pension in 1820. According to his army papers he was aged 35 at the time (so born about 1786) and came from Morley near Leeds. However, having researched baptisms for the Morley area in the 1780s, there is no sign of him. Does anyone have any information on his parentage and how he might fit into the tree? We'd love to to hear from you.

George Stables' presentation clock

Dennis Wilkinson has acquired a clock which was presented to George Stables (1894-1988) by the officials of Hickleton Main Colliery on his marriage to Mary Ellis in 1929. If anyone has a close relationship to George & Mary, please contact us through this website.

Brian Stables

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Brian Stables of Canada on 22nd April 2012 after a long battle with cancer. Brian first contacted the website around ten years ago and since then has contributed immensely to its content, writing a series of fascinating memoirs which can be viewed here. He gave very generously of his time & knowledge and was a lively correspondent. He will be greatly missed. We send our condolences to his family and friends.

We have ben contacted by David Braden form Chicago, Illinois, who is trying to ascertain the parentage of Wiliam Stables who was born circa 1799. He married Ann Towns in Pontefract in 1819. Does anyone have any information on this family?

Sandygate Farm Lease

The final gem from Timur is a transcript of William Stables's lease agreement for Sandygate Farm, Harewood in 1796, which requires him, amongst other conditions, to deliver three carts of coal a year to the big house.

Harewood Pews 1748

Timur is a PhD student at York University, researching the development of the Harewood Estate Landscape between 1690-1812. During his work, he has discovered numerous references to the Stables Family amongst archive material from the Estate, which he has very kindly supplied for inclusion on the web-site.
The first of these items is a fascinating entry in the Harewood Parish Register relating to a transfer of ownership of a pew. You can read a transcript here.

Court Sessions 1670

Matthew Stables - Letter Dated 1891

Marianne has discovered a fantastic letter amongst her great aunt Bertha Black's estate papers in the USA. It was written by Matthew Stables of Barnsley in 1891, on Burdin, Stables, Wood & Co. headed notepaper. The letter refers to his uncle Abraham (my own GG-Grandfather) and the death of his 'little girl'. She has very kindly scanned the letter for us, which you can view with a transcript here.

William Thomlinson of Burne

Michael has found the will and inventory of William Thomlinson of Burne in the British Library. William was the father of Ann, who married William Stables Junior of Kippax around 1640. He was a very wealthy man and left money to William & Anne's children. You can view the will and inventory here.

Tragic Suicide in 1896

Jim has kindly sent us a fascinating newspaper report about the suicide of James Forster Stables in London, together with copies of his death certificate and the death certificate of his father John Kitchingman Stables. He has also supplied a new photo of the Stables Lane signpost in Barnburgh, which the council have obviously cleaned up since my last visit.
