Charles William Podmore & Mary Ann Stables - 1883 - BarnsleyThe Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, BarnsleyWitnessed by William Stables and Elizabeth Letitia Stables
Date Name Age Condition Profession Residence Father’s Name Father’s Profession
First January 1883 Charles William Podmore 29 years Widower Colliery Horsekeeper Darfield Barnsley William Podmore (deceased) Clicker
Mary Ann Stables 22 years Spinster   Victoria Road Barnsley John Stables (deceased) Stone Mason

Note: Charles Podmore fabricated his own middle name and created a fictitious father at the time of his marriage to Mary Ann Stables. He was actually illegitimate and, it is believed, would not have known who is father was. The deception was presumably to avoid revealing his illegitimacy to the vicar at the Wesleyan Chapel, which may have been frowned upon, especially considering the fact that he was superintendent at the Sunday School of the Wesleyan Chapel for 38 years. His middle name does not appear on his birth certificate or baptism record. (Background details courtesy of Reg Dyson).
