Introduction

Welcome to the Stables Family History Web-Site, which aims to document the history and ancestry of the Stables families in Yorkshire from their origins around Leeds through to their modern expansion into the whole of Yorkshire and beyond.

This is the definitive reference to the history of the STABLES surname within Yorkshire and the surrounding counties.

Foreword

I started researching my own history in 2000 and uncovered masses of background information about people with the surname of Stables during the course of my investigation. I found this information much more interesting than the nuts & bolts of the family tree, as it tells us about their lives and teaches us about the social history of the period.

The information uncovered revealed the most startling fact...every living Stables in South Yorkshire appears to descend from a single man, Christopher Stable, who was living in Swillington at the beginning of the 16th Century.

I started this web-site in October 2002 in order to make the research available to anyone with an interest. Three months later, I joined forces with Michael Chance, and we pooled our collections, which resulted in the impressive body of work that you see here today.

Since then many other wonderful people have been in touch to share their research too. This web-site is a tribute to all of you.

Michael now handles most email enquiries to the web-site and maintains the South Yorkshire family trees.
