The Stables Families of Harewood
The Harewood Stables line is one of only two Yorkshire branches of the family that are known to have descendents living today. They were wealthy yeomen and farmers with considerable land holdings throughout the County.
A great deal is known about some of the Harewood Stableses, in particular William Stables who was born in 1705 and is immortalised in a novel written by his grand-daughter's husband. You can read a summary of his life and find the entire text of the novel here.
Over the course of the early part of the 19th century, William Stables of Kirkby Overblow conducted a significant study of the genealogy of the Harewood branch of the Stables Family, collecting together an incredible amount of information that he entitled The Notices of the Stables Family. This document, which extends to over 130 pages, can be viewed here.
The earliest confirmed ancestors, William Stables and his wife, Agnes, were known to have leased lands at Hederick, in Harewood. His son, John Stables and his wife, Margaret, were known to have held lands in Harewood and may have also lived at Wentworth in the parish of Wath-Upon-Dearne. It is believed that their son Anthony may have gone to live in Wath and found some of the earliest Stables lines there. You can read more about them here.
