Jonas Stables of Wombwell (1663-1737)

Jonas was the son of William Stables of Idle in the parish of Calverley and was baptised at Calverley parish church in 1663.

He married Dorothy Gommersall of Guiseley at her parish church in 1705 and by the time of his death in 1737 they had moved to Wombwell in the parish of Darfield.

His Will

This is a summary of the Will of Jonas Stables of Wombwell, near Darfield, who died in 1737.

bullet To Dorothy, his wife, one third of rents and profits from his lands.
bullet All lands in Gildersome in possession of Michael Ellis unto brother Samuel Stables.
bullet Lands in Pudsey in the possession of Ibraim Marshall unto James Stables and Jonas Stables his nephews.
bullet Profits from other lands in Gildersome now in possession of William Appleby unto the said Samuel Stables Joseph Smith & John Milner of Gildersome in trust for the poor and aged people now settled in Gildersome to be paid half yearly.
bullet All lands in Driglington in possession of John Mortimer unto John Lobley the younger of Pudsey Clothier and James Lobley of the same place Clothier his nephews.
bullet All his ready money to John Lobley.
bullet To John William Walter Mary Hannah Elliner and Sarah children of his sister Sarah Farrer late of Pudsey widow dead £200 divided equally amongst them.
bullet To his sister Mary wife of Samuel Swaine of Little Horton his sister and to James Christopher Ann Mary and Martha her children the like.
bullet To his sister Grace the wife of John Lobley the Elder of Pudsey his sister and to John James Mary & Elisabeth her children the like.
bullet To Samuel Stables of Burstall (sic. Birstall) his nephew £40.

The Full Transcript of the Will of Jonas Stables of Wombwell (dated 1729 and 1737)

In the name of God Amen I Jonas Stables of Wombwell in the county of York yeoman being in perfect health and of sound disposing mind and memory praised be God, but calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and being willing to settle my affairs so as no difference may arise amongst my relations after my decease do make ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner following and first as touching the disposition of my real estate I give and dispose of the same as follows that is to say it is my will and mind that Dorothy my dear and loving wife shall receive and take to her own propper use and benefit during the term of her natural life one third part of the rents and profitts of my real estate in full satisfaction and recompense of all the Dower, thirds or other right which she may Claime or Demand out of any part of my estate hereafter mentioned. Item it is my will and mind and I do hereby give and devise all my messuages lands tenements and Hereditaments situate lying and being in Gildersome in the said county with all the priviledges easements and appurtenances thereto belonging and which are now in the possession of Michael Ellis unto my brother Samuel Stables and to his heirs and assignes for ever. Item I give and devise all my messuages lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever situate lying and being in Pudsey in the said county in the possession of Abraim Marshall unto James Stables and Jonas Stables my nephews and to their heirs and assignes for ever equally to be divided betwixt them as tenants in common and not as joynt tenants. Item I give and devise all other my lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever in Gildersome afore said not before disposed of, and which are now in the possession of William Appleby with all priviledges and apputenances whatsoever to the same belonging unto the said Samuel Stables Joseph Smith and John Milner of Gildersome aforesaid and their heirs upon special trust and confidence that they the said Samuel Stables Joseph Smith and John Milner and their heirs and the survivor and survivors of them his and their heirs shall receive and make the rents profitts of the said lands and premises and shall distribute and pay the same half yearly or otherwise as the same becomes due after a deduciton of taxes and other incident charges unto such poor aged and necessitous people legally settled within the said town of Gildersome as shall subsist without the towns workhouse according to the discretion of my said trustees and upon this further trust that when any two of my said trustees shall happen to dye the survivor or the heirs of such survivor shall give over the said lands and premises to the use of himself and two other trustees inhabiting within the said town of Gildersome and their heirs in trust for the purpose afore said and the same course way and provision for propagating the said trust to be continued for ever. Item I give and devise all my messuage lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever situate lying and being within the township of Drighlington in the possession of John Mortimer or else where in the said county of York not before by me disposed of unto John Lobley the younger of Pudsey afore said Clothier and James Lobley of the same plase Clothier, my nephews and to their heirs and asignes forever. Equally to be divided betwixt them as tenants in common and not as joynt tenants and as touching the disposition of my personal estate I give and dispose of the sayme as followeth, that is to say I give and devise all my goods chattles and personal estate whatsoever either in ready money money out of interest or otherwise how so ever unto the said John Lobley my nephew upon condition that he shall pay thereout all my just debts funeral expenses the charges of proveing this my will and likewise shall and do satisfye and pay thereout to the several persons hereafter named the severall and respective legacys or sums of money hereinafter by me appointed that is to say to John, William, Walter, Mary, Hannah, Elliner and Sarah children of my sister Sarah Farrer late of Pudsey aforesaid widow dead the sum of two hundred pounds equally to be divided amongst them share and share like. To Mary the wife of Samuel Swaine of Little Horton in the said county [-- -----] my sister and to James, Christopher, Ann, Mary and Martha her children the like sum of two hundred pounds equally to be divided amongst them share and share like. To Grace the wife of John Lobley the elder of Pudsey aforesaid my sister and to John, James, Mary and Elizabeth her children the like sum of two hundred pounds equally to be divided amongst them share and share like. To Samuel Stables of Burstall in the said county my nephew the sum of forty pounds and to William Goodall of Tong in the said County Malster the sum of thirty pounds. The said severall respective legacies to be paid to my said legatees and to each of them respectively at the end of twelve months next after my decease and I do constitute and appoint the said John Lobley my nephew sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me formerly made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of August anno domini 1729, Jonas Stables. Signed sealed published and declared by the Testator to be his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at his request subscribed our names as witnesses, William Banks, Mary Knewstubb, John Knewstubb.

Whereas I Jonas Stables have within given my lands and testaments in Gildersome within mentioned not before by me disposed of and which were late in possession of William Appleby but now in the possession of John Appleby with all the privileges whatsoever to the same belonging unto Samuel Stables Joseph Smith and John Milner of Gildersome within named I do hereby after determin and disclaime such estate by me disposed of and I will do give and devise the said estate now in the possession of the said John Appleby or his assigne or assignes unto James Lobley and his heirs for ever and whereas I have given and devised all my messuages and lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever situate lying and being within the township of Drighlington late in the possession of John Mortimer but now in the possession of Samuel Mortimer or else where in the said county of York not before by me disposed of unto John Lobley the younger of Pudsey aforesaid Clothier and James Lobley of the same place Clothier my nephews and their Heirs and assignes for ever equally to be divided between them as tenants in common and not joynt tenants. I do hereby after determine and disannul such estate by me disposed of and I will do give and devise all the said estate before mentioned ____" ____ now in the possesion of the said Samuel Mortimer his assigne or assignes unto Dorothy the wife of Richard [-------] of Wombwell in the county of York and her heirs for ever and whereas I have given to James the son of John Lobley a part or share of two hundred pounds within written I do hereby after determine and disanull such legacy to the said James but that the same shall be paid to my executor herein named and I do hereby ratifye and confirm this my further last will and testament and to be taken as part thereof in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty second day of October anno domini 1737.
Jonas Stables signed sealed published and declared by the testator to be taken as further part of his will in the presence of us who are I his presence and at his request subscribe our naimes as witnesses. The mark of Francis Hinchcliffe John Birks Thomas Darby George Wood this will passed the seal the 30th day of December 1737.
